Thread: IXOS Cables

    Default IXOS Cables

Last year, I replace my old speaker cables by Ixos cables. I didn't find the model that I bought on their Web site, but it looks a little bit like the XHS806S Shimmer. This is not a joke, but I really see a difference. My sound is better.

There is no question that high quality cables can noticably improve the audio performance of a system. From personal experimentation I've found that power cables in particular can have a big impact on the sound of a system. I have not played around with different speaker cables too much in the past but it is something that I'm planning on doing as well.

How much did these cables cost? And does this brand have a Canadian distributor or did you buy them off the internet Freetoojazz?

my experience with cables thus far has been gauge matters far more than "quality"

that said, i haven't had a lot of opportunity to demo vastly different grades of the same gauge cable...

    Depends on the speaker system.

Electrically, speaker cable is a resistor in series with the speaker. With low Qts drivers I like to try very small wire (24Ga) as speaker wire. Why? The added resistance raises the effective Qts of the driver which slightly increases the bass output. It will also tame the upper end response which may be desirable if the speakers are bright.

what do you mean by "qts" of the driver gio? i've never seen this specified for any speaker or driver before.

Qts is the total damping of the driver itself (physical plus electrical), low Qts drivers are good in a sealed enclosure while high Qts drivers are better in a vented enclosure. Low Qts is usually 0.7, high is something like 1.2

Actually low Qts drivers (Qts < 0.25-0.3) are best suited for horn loading.
    0.3 to about 0.5 ported
    0.6 to 0.8 sealed
    and above that open baffle.

Those are very general guidelines for enclosure type.

FWIW- Here is a summary of the Thiele-Small (TS) Speaker Parameters.

    Cheers
