Free Over-the-Air Digital HDTV & SDTV Introduction
Hello,
I want to let everyone know that for a relatively small ($50-$500) one-time investment in the appropriate equipment, people can get solid, crystal clear, digital reception of Standard Definintion and High Definition digital TV channels for free over-the-air (OTA).
People who love their sports on the big HDTV often install OTA specifically to watch their games. OTA high definition signals come in in 1080i. Many HDTV lovers believe OTA is the best way to go for excellent high definition picture quality. Some add it to their current set-up. Others are so happy with the channel selection OTA that they end up cancelling their cable.
People in the GTA as far north as Newmarket and Bradford are able to get the all of the Buffalo broadcast stations with the right equipment set-up. Bascially the entire Golden Horseshoe can receive all of the main Canadian and American broadcast networks.
Broadcast TV stations have transmitters on the CN Tower in Toronto and on other towers elsewhere (Buffalo, Batavia, Rochester, Hamilton, Barrie, etc.). They are spending $$ to transmit these signals to the public. They provide their HD signal over-the-air transmission to the public freely - so go get it! You listen to AM & FM radio for free, don't you? Well right beside those AM & FM transmitters are TV transmitters sending out dozens of free HD and digital SD channels your way. All you need is the right antenna in the right location.
The only thing that can go wrong is that your signal can be blocked by large objects such as trees, buildings, hills, or valleys. If you want the best reception your antenna should be as high as possible, and OUTDOORS.

Currently in the US, TV stations are allowed to broadcast sub-channels in addition to their main HD channel (e.g. NBC Buffalo HD channel 2-1 also broadcasts 2-2 Universal Sports Network).

GTA people should be aware of how fortunate we are. I personally always perceived that Americans had a lot more available TV channels over-the-air than Canadians had. My perception probably stems from my youth where I can remember that all we could get on our TV at the cottage with a rabbit-ear antenna was a snowy CBC, CTV, TVO, and French CBC. Americans get their interesting network TV stations over-the-air, BUT SO DO WE! Not only to we get all of our 10+ Canadian channels, but in the GTA we get everything the Americans get, too. And now that the broadcasts have transitioned to Digital from Analog, there are no more snowy pictures. Everything comes in in clear digital perfect pictures. Free HD onto your TV.
