The Emotiva EMC-1 has simplified my setup now. I run HDMI from my HTPC directly to the processor and let it do all the work.
The UMC-1 then does all the video switching and audio decoding in native formats.
I have the cheapest cable sub and the cable box has S-video so that goes into the UMC-1 and is upscaled to 720p and looks super duper
I have been giving thought to attaching a HTPC. I'm wondering if I attach instead an external media HDD via USB to my OPPO BDP 93 for music primarily (ripped CD's and HD music downloads).
It depends on the functionality you are looking for
I manage all my media on my HTPC, it's the hub for all my viewing and listening, not just an add-on.
I use foobar to listen to music, a web browser for video streaming and VLC for watching BD and DVD and ripped video. I have my 23" monitor, wireless keyboard and mouse next to my favorite sitting position and I'm totally good to go, nothing else I need
