After almost a year, my Channel Master 7400 still records; but its front and rear USB ports no longer work, and its tuning reception ability and display quality have always been inferior to that of my Sony LCD TV set. The cost of this unit was $429.99 + $25.00 shipping + $59.15 HST = $514.14

From a west-facing antenna in Ottawa my Channel Master delivers the following channels:
    4.1 CBOT-DT (English)
    6.1 CIII-HD (English)
    9,1 CBOFT-D (French)
    13.1 CJOH (English)
    24.1 TVO (English)
    30.1 CIVO-DT (French)
    34.1 CFGS (French)
    40.3 CH1 HD (French)

But, unlike my Sony TV, the Channel Master cannot receive:
    11.1 CHCH (English)
    43.1 CHRO (English)

Returning the unit requires a lot of patience waiting for telephone operator assistance, and in the end might not be worthwhile simply to get delivery of another unit with operational USB ports.

A better bet might be to add a Silicon Dust HD HomeRun, which might give better reception, and maybe even be able to receive channels 11.1 (CHCH) and 43.1 (CHRO). Would anyone know for sure whether these hopes would be justified?

Not sure of all your requirements and this whole topic is not my forte, but I see that the Silicon Dust HD HomeRun is a network device that has no recording or storage capability of it's own. It relies on a PC on the same network running Media Center to do the recording. The cool thing is any PC on the network can use the Silicon Dust HD HomeRun.

Since I've never used one I don't know if it would provide the reception you are looking for.

It does look like an interesting device though.
