    Default Multi channel music recommendations

What stuff are you guys feeling? I always recommend BT's "This Binary Universe" to people. It might not be everyone's cup of tea, musically, but as an example of surround music it is awesome. Its a downtempo electronica album that was written specifically for 5.1, and has tons of discrete effects and activity in the surrounds.

BT is an incredible musician and a great engineer, so listening to this on a proper sound system is an amazing experience. Try it in the dark!

I love demonstrating multi-channel music in my home theatre to friends. Everyone that has any interest in music is usually blown away when listening to multi-channel albums.

A couple of discs that I like to use:

Dark Side of the Moon (30th Anniversary Edition) [Hybrid SACD]
    http://www.amazon.ca/Dark-Side-Moon-...0039090&sr=1-1

Legends of Jazz With Ramsey Lewis: Showcase [Blu-ray]
    http://www.amazon.ca/Legends-Jazz-Ra...0039026&sr=1-1

I also heard this SACD at a friend's house a couple of days ago, and it sounded so good that I immediately bought it on ebay:

Brothers In Arms (20th Anniversary Edition) [SACD]

DSOTM is on sale at HMV right now for $9.99 IIRC...the hybrid disc with SACD and CD

The HMV on Yonge near dundas had the Brothers in Arms SACD forever. I almost bought it soooo many times and never pulled the trigger and now their (albeit tiny) SACD section is gone completely! #$%

Even in stereo Dire Straits made some really well produced, great sounding music

BTW to everyone else, if anyone is interested in checking out that BT dvd i was talking about earlier, Suave might have a copy for sale haha

first time in ages i have actually had the time to sit down with my feet up and listen to a little music for no reason other than my own enjoyment...just plowing through DSOTM and marvelling at what an amazing mix (and album) this is.

Dark Side of the Moon (30th Anniversary Edition) [Hybrid SACD]
i have this CD as well. it's impressive, although i am bottle necked with my speakers (soon to upgrade)

i also have Roxy Music, Avalon. huh .. weird though when i link to it ..on amazon .. what ? one left @ $ 150 ? odd, i didn't pay this price.

here's what i see on the case (i'm no expert here)

    - PCM & DSD Stereo
    - Multi-channel Stereo (same thing i guess)
    - Has a bonus track - DSD Multi-Channel .. tack title "Always Unknowning"
    - Made in Holland (may mean something)

    Brothers in Arms .. cool.

So given that SACD is essentially going the way of the do-do and Blu-Ray is new an up and coming, would it make more sense to pursue the Blu-Ray space for surround audio?

How does the sound on SACD compare to Blu-Ray - strictly from a sound quality perspective? I would expect the Blu-Ray would win and it's really about the number of titles out on Blu-Ray that would be the limiting factor.

I'm a huge fan of multi-channel music and really wish that more modern artists would utilize it more in their releases.

Blu-ray may soon replace SACD altogether, since it can deliver the same quality (if not better) of audio and a high res video to match. Not that everyone wants to release multi-channel music with video. But there are some lables that began releasing Blu-ray "audio only" discs.

For the time being, some of the greatest multi-channel albums (Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Nine Inch Nails) in my opinion have only been released on SACD or DVD-Audio. These are all studio recorded albums.

Blu-ray releases on the other hand are mostly (if not all) concert recordings... and while these can be very entertaining to watch/listen, they just don't deliver the same experience as an in-studio made surround mix. That's just my five cents...

I would really like to hear The Downward Spiral in Multi-Channel, but I don't think I'll go beyond 2 speakers in my system any time soon. First step is to get a blu-ray player that can play SACDs, I guess.

First step would be to get that universal Blu-ray player we talked about in the other thread The Nine Inch Nails "Downward Spiral" is an awesome disc to listen to in surround sound - one of my favourites really. Better yet is the Nine Inch Nails "With Teeth" multi-channel SACD.
