    Default Klipsch KLF-20 question

    Any KLF-20 owners out there?

The reason is that I'd like to know the length of the ports in your speakers. KLF-20s are supposed to have great deep bass response with twin 10" woofers each, but mine have never been that good. In fact, my CF-1s have better bass extension.

Now I bought mine used and just realized that the plastic port "mouths" (two in each speaker) look like they should have a pipe extension on them. As they are, the ports are only about 3" deep (and flared like a horn) which seems awfully short.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Fantastic! Many thanks.

Having never seen a pair before, I kept putting mine closer and closer to the wall to try and get some decent bass extension. Looking forward to hearing back from you.

finding the best balance between bass and sound stage is definitely a matter of positioning and it does require some experimentation.

I had a very large room when I was using those speakers and found good bass with them about 1.5' from the wall and they were quite good, they won't give you a lot of bass at low listening levels but at levels over 100db they will pound you quite nicely, these speakers work best when played LOUD

Maybe that's been my problem all along! One can only do so much with 3 watts of power, even if the speakers are 100dB efficient.

    I'm back!!

Checked the ports and they are short, around 3" as you describe.

I ran these speakers on 2 different amp, first they were on a sweet Onkyo M504 with 165wpc and then I switched the amp to a Carver tfm 35x THX with 250+ wpc.

The Klipshes are capable of 800 peak power handing, 200 continuous, if I remember correctly and even though they are quite efficient, they do like LOTS of power. With 3 watts, you probably won't get a lot of bass, as bass takes the most power to reproduce, which is why low power amps prefer horn loaded subs.

Thanks so much for looking into this for me! I'll try them with more powerful amp to see if the bass extension improves.

They are also bi-ampable, with the top connections being for the high frequency drivers and the bottom pair for the 10" drivers.

you could use the tubie for the top and a higher power amp for the lows

You know, despite all the time I've been into audio, bi-amping is something I've never really played around with. The KLFs would be a good place to try it out.

This sounds like a wonderful idea AlienTech - I've never heard anyone suggesting this.

Let us know how this works out if you end up trying it Thommy!
