Thread: Denon 1712

    Default Denon 1712

    Hi all,

A cousin of mine has a Denon 1712. He wanted to hook up his Shaw Motorola Cable set top box(not sure of the model #) but it only has a DVI output. Can he use a DVI to hdmi female adaptor to hook into a HDMI input on the receiver? I know he will only receive the video portion. He can use a toslink optical to get sound on his receiver via the cable set top box.

If this is possible then does he need to go into his cable box's menu and set it for DVI or HDMI? The rest is easy after that but I just want to make sure I'm giving him the right information over the phone. Thanks for all your help.

If the HD box is anything like the Cisco or SA boxes that Rogers uses, he should be fine just plugging in the dvi-hdmi adapter to the HD box and connecting the hdmi cable to the Denon. Alternatively, he could connect the box directly to the tv with the optical to the Denon.

    Hi audit13,

Sorry if my post is confusing. The Shaw Motorola has a DVI output which he will connect the DVI to Hdmi adaptor female and connect it to an hdmi input into his AVR 1712. He can use the AVR 1712 to switch to that SAT/CAB input and get his video. The sound can still be via the optical output from the cable box to his digital input to his receiver. I wanted to know if one has to go into the menu of the cable box and set it to DVI? I'm assuming so but just need clarification before I give him that information.

On a side note, the AVR 1712 doesn't upconvert analog signals to digital signals as in the past so using a RGB analog cord plugged via the component video out to component video in on the avr receiver will not upconvert the signal to the hdmi monitor out according to their manual.

    Ok, thanks again audit13.

I don't think there would be a problem connecting the dvi video output from HD box to the hdmi input on the Denon. For greater flexibility when I had a Rogers HD box (model 3250 with dvi out), I connected the dvi out from the box to the hdmi input on my Samsung tv. I also connected the analog L/R output from the Rogers box to my Samsung as well so I could watch/hear tv without having to turn on my receiver. I also connected the optical output from the Rogers box to the optical input on my receiver so I could watch programs in 5.1 if I so desired.

In doing all of this, I don't recall having to set anything in the menu of the Rogers box. Since you are taling about a Shaw box, the Shaw set up may be different.

Ok, thanks audit13. When I talk with him I will ask him to check it out. I like your idea of hooking up analog rca's to your tv without having to turn on your receiver. I find varying channels volume controls are up and down. Of course it would be nice to have Dolby volume and not have to worry. Anyways, thanks for your input.
