    Default 3D or not 3D?

I was discussing with a client that there should be some great deals soon on 2D gear as manufactures roll out their new 3D units. The Pan. 4000u is under $2000 msrp, and that is a great performing projector. So what do you guys think, 3D or 2D ? Personally I can do without the lousy 3D story lines, glasses and bouts of nausea.

I have been very unimpressed with the 3D I've seen. I find it very distracting, with all kinds of visual flaws. I think someone on this forum once said that they would rather settle for great 2D over the issues with 3D picture quality. I would need to see major improvements before I would take the leap.
I think I beg for toys more now at 36 than I did at 6... damn technology!

Welcome to the forum kpedersen - it's great to have another member of the industry onboard! It sounds like you provide home theatre/automation solutions judging by your signature but it would be great if you told us more about yourself in the intro thread here: http://canadahifi.com/forum/forumdis...ideo-interests

If you have a website, please feel free to include it in your signature. Better yet if you have any picture of installs that you've done, please post them in the gallery threads

The adoption rate of 3D has shown that 3D is certainly not for everyone. The last time I saw statistics on this the report said that only about 10% of all TVs being sold in North America are 3D TVs. As manufacturers are rolling out new 3D projectors, there is no question that 2D models can be purchased for a more attractive price.

Nevertheless, some really do enjoy the 3D experience (like myself) even though it isn't perfect. I think you should ask your client what type of movies/content he normally watches. If he's into sci-fi, superhero and computer animated movies then a 3D projector probably makes sense - as many of these types of movies are now being released in 3D. However if he's not into these types of movies than a 2D projector will work just fine.

As a side note - to date, the best looking 3D picture I've seen has been from a JVC projector.

To 3D or not 3D...that is the question. Just as Hamlet faced his difficult question, clients are faced with the same challenge.

3D software is available in limited quantities. The industry is in a bit of a mess in terms of it's integration in home a/v. The long term affect on the eyes could be questionable as we tend not to use our muscles in daily life the same way as we are demanded to use while watching 3D. The light output is severely cut down using glasses, which makes spec'ing a 3D system with good picture quality very important when coming to screen size/finish and the projector used. ...and, is the client willing to reduce the quality of their 2D imagery for a fantastic 3D presentation? If 2D is optomized, then 3D will suffer. ...hence the dual screen applications...

    Questions, questions...
