Default Samsung U.S.A. settles class action lawsuit re faulty capacitors in certain HDTVs

I have a Samsung lcd tv that I purchased in 2007 that was included in a U.S. class action settlement. There was no mention of a settlement for Canada. When I called Samsung Canada, the rep took my info and arranged to have a service tech come out and replace the bad capacitors in my tv at no charge. When the tech had the back off the tv, I could clearly see the bulging caps.

Samsung Canada did not ask for proof of purchase, they just needed a valid model and serial number.

People with a tv on the list should look into having the capacitors replaced for free if they are experiencing any issues which include not turning on, experiencing a delay in turning on, making a clicking sound, cycling on and off, or other similar problems.

The same thing happened to my neighbour audit13. She called Samsung tech support explained what the problem was (her TV was not turning on at all) and they sent a Samsung tech to her house a few days later to replace the capacitors.

It's a hassle but at least Samsung is taking responsibility for their TVs. Luckily my Samsung is not on the list

That's good they're following through with this, although I truly believe that the models listed won't be the end. As great as Samsung is for image quality, I've been around some newer panels that make loud snapping/clicking sounds.

The sad part is that people who owned the affected models may have simply trashed the tv rather than having it diagnosed and repaired as these models have been discontinued for years. I didn't use the tv too often and the problem didn't surface until a few months ago. I did some research on the problem, found the solution and decided to wait until the problem got worse before attempting my own fix. Once I saw that Samsung had settled, I put in my call to Samsung Canada and had the capacitors replaced, gratis

Man - terrible news but it's good they are fixing the issue on a call by call basis - not nearly as good as a formal recall but second best. Perhaps threads like these will make the news more public and people will call for service before trashing or giving away their sets.

Guess what? Samsung has instructed the third-party repair tech to replace the faulty 10v capacitors with 10v capacitors. Why so cheap Samsung? According to threads I have seen all over the Internet, the replacement caps need to be 12v.
