pre outs versus dedicated preamp

Hello, if a person runs from the pre outs on an integrated (Arcam A70 in this case) to a pwr. amp is this not just as efficient sound wise as a dedicated preamp? I assume the pwr. amp is out of the line and then not a factor. If the dedicated preamp is still sonically superior I would keep my eye out for a used C31. I don't know of many other units with the input flexibility of Arcam.

that is the intent of pre-outs, if the integrated has a high quality pre-amp you can certainly take advantage of that by adding a power amp

Using the pre outs from any integrated amplifier (or an AV receiver for that matter) means that you are completely by-passing the amplifier section. This effectively means that you are using the component as a standalone preamp.

The Arcam A70 is an excellent sounding integrated amp (I use the Arcam A65 Plus to power my patio speakers) and I'm certain that it will work very well when used a pre amp. The Arcam C31 is a very well reviewed power amp and I'm sure that it would reward you with a sonic upgrade... although you won't know exactly what it is until you give it a try

Let us know if you end up picking up the C31.
