    Default vinyl

Hello, I don't see a section for vinyl itself so I posted this here. Has anyone seen the movie "Vinyl" made in 2000 by Toronto filmmaker Alan Zweig? It is based on record collecting, the film displays the degree which some enthusiasts go. I am curious what anyone who has seen the movie thought.

I saw it and while some of the things were interesting, the documentary as a whole struck me as somewhat depressing. I beleive you can still view this on TVO.org under documentaries.

I have seen it. It is a documentary on people that are obsessed with collecting vinyl just because it is vinyl. They don't care what style of music or quality of recording it is.
Their main concerns are how rare it is and wether or not they have it in their collection.

It's sad because most of the collectors interveiwed spend all of their income on records and their homes are so packed full that they can hardly move.

Also none of them seem to have an audio system capable of properly extracting any of the musical nuances that make vinyl superior to all other mediums. (what a shame having so much great music and never hearing it).

Oh well, I guess it's time to warm up some tubes and spin some tunes.

I haven't seen the movie but based on some of the comments above it does sound a little sad... collecting records but not owning a nice system to enjoy them on. What's the point then?!?

And speaking of vinyl, check out the post I made this afternoon on the home page about a new store that just opened (appearantly they'll be offering a crazy selection of new and classic albums):

Thats crazy... But good! Product lines are the same at her other store. This looks nicer and more like home. Good choice by her.

I agree Mike - this store looks much more comfortable and open then Amercian Sound of Canada (never quite understood that name). I've visited Angie a couple times - she almost sold me an Audio Research SP9 MkII once - perhaps I should have bought it..?

Suave - would have loved to have been there - did you actually get some time to enjoy a quality listening session on any of those systems? Did anything bite you?

I only got to sit down for a few minutes in front of one of the systems - the one with the Sonus Faber speakers and Audio Research electronics. But I was very much entertained by what I heard. This system offered one of the furthest reaching soundstages I've heard in a very long time - the depth and width were just spectacular and made the performances seem huge. The stereo imaging was also next to none. Overall this system kind of blew me away!

This system is shown in the last picture in my article: http://canadahifi.com/index.php/intr...-hill-ontario/
