Default Question about BR Player and Reciever

    Hello all,

Long time lurker first time poster. I have a question as I was trying to find the information by myself online but I never got the answer I fully wanted.

Currently I have an older HTIB system Onkyo HT-S330 which I will be getting rid off as after 2 years it is starting to fail and Blu Rays are being played through my fat launch day PS3.

Now I want to buy a standalone blu ray player and just use the PS3 strictly for games.

I am looking at buying the Panasonic DMP BDT500.

My question is, since the blu ray player can decode all the high end codecs and can hook up my current speakers, will it be worth it to also buy a new A/V Reciever or will that just be a waste of money?

I eventually plan on buying new speakers (Klipsch series just not sure which series yet)

For recievers I was looking at the Pioneer VSX-1122-K.

Is it a good idea to get the BR player and the reciever or should I just stick with the BR Player to process audio and video?

    Thank You

Haha - I have a feeling we have many of your types reading our posts Glad to have you join the conversations here!

The Panasonic DMP BDT500 is an excellent, very well reviewed player - so you can't go wrong here. Playing Blu-rays through the PS3 is cumbersome... I know because I did it myself when it first came out. The DMP BDT500 will decode all of the latest codecs found on Blu-ray discs and output them via HDMI or analogue outputs. Presuming your HTIB receiver offers compatible inputs you can feed these signals to it. However due to the limitations of the receiver and the speakers in this package it is pretty unlikely that you'll hear any significant (if any) sonic improvements.

If you really would like to hear what the new audio formats on Blu-ray discs offer then a new AV receiver is definitely the way to go. The entry-level Pioneer VSX-1122 you mention above is again a well regarded component and should make a good first step to building a multi-channel system.

You should be aware that your existing speaker provided with the Onkyo HTIB won't take advantage of the new Pioneer AV receiver since they are likely fine-tuned to work specifically with this specific Onkyo receiver. This is simply a limitation of every HTIB... but once you get a set of Klipsch speakers you'll really hear all the benefits. Your music listening, movie watching and gaming playing will be an entirely new experience!

    Hope this helps

Thank you very much for the response,

new to the audio side so any help is greatly appreciated!

I will definitely be getting the BR player then and then start shopping and researching a new receiver to go along with it
